Some of my favorite food quotes, Part 2

Last summer, I posted some of my favorite food quotes and called it part 1.  Recently, I realized that I never posted a part 2!  Well, I ‘m feeling a little introspective this morning, so here goes.

Looking back over the quotes that I’ve saved, some seemed so much more meaningful to me now.  For example:

“The act of putting into your mouth what the earth has grown is perhaps your most direct interaction with the earth.” – Frances Moore Lappe

After my first year of CSA membership, this really hits home.  The closer we are to where our food comes from,  the more connected we are to the earth.  And it isn’t just produce – it’s important to know and to acknowledge where all our food comes from.  (Vegetarians and vegans may want to skip this one.)

“Thanks cows.  I appreciate your tastiness.” – Craig Ferguson

Yes, it’s meant to be funny, but it’s also true.  🙂

Here’s one that applies to all us food bloggers out there:

“You can’t just eat good food.  You’ve got to talk about it too.  And you’ve got to talk about it to somebody who understands that kind of food” – Kurt Vonnegut, Jailbird

So, thank you to everyone out there who talks about food!  Every one of the blogs that I follow, I follow because I like to read what you say about food.  I’ve been inspired by recipes and pictures, learned new techniques and new ingredients, and well, it’s just fun.

“No one who cooks, cooks alone.  Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.” – Laurie Colwin

So true!  Cooking is many things to many people – an expression of love, a relaxation technique, a way to be creative, and a connected to memories associated with a particular food, recipe or technique – and the person you learned it from.

The next two quotes made me think about my recent addictions to bread baking and pizzas.

“Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of all feasts.” – James Beard

“I love my pizza so much, in fact, that I have come to believe in my delirium that my pizza might actually love me, in return.  I am having a relationship with this pizza, almost an affair.” – Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

I was reading a post the other day that I can’t find now, but it was about a life-changing loaf of bread.  My life-changing bread moment was when I realized that not only can I make it myself, but the bread I make myself is better, in every way, that what can be bought at the grocery store.  It goes back to being connected to your food and the difference that it’s made to me personally.  (Apparently that’s the theme of the day!)

I’ll leave you with one more quote that just sums everything up:

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above horded gold, it would be a merrier world.” – J. R. R. Tolkien

Love ’em?  Hate ’em?  What’s your favorite food quote or saying?

Cheers, everyone, and have a wonderful weekend!

One of my favorite food quotes is from Julia Child. “If you’re afraid of butter, use cream.” Not too deep, but is telling about the chef. I love her!

    Melissa,
    I love these quotes!
I don’t know if I have a favorite food quote, but I like the Penzey’s slogan “Love people. Cook them tasty food.” enough to slap a decal of it up on my kitchen wall.
Thanks–you’re great to read when you are introspective.

Love them all, even the one about cows. I could say it to the chickens about the eggs. Eat, Pray, Love was a great book, and I may have to reread it now. I really dig the quote about not being alone in the kitchen. It’s so true and especially with this blogging community. I know somebody, other than the Hubby of course, will appreciate the fun of food.
One quote I love: “He that takes medicine and neglects his diet wastes the time of his doctor.” Chinese proverb.

That’s a great quote! Since I started blogging, I’ve found that I’m willing to spend more time cooking and making food pretty, even if I’m just cooking for myself, because I know I’ll be sharing it. That awareness helps me eat healthier, too!

Oh! I love this idea. “Let thy food be thy medicine”. I am so inspired that I may use this as the basis for one of my top ten in the future and link back to you – OK?

    Love this!
My very favorite food quote is from Grandma Galizio as she taught me to make sauce-
“You just have to have patience, honey. Don’t rush it. Your sauce won’t be so good if you rushed the browning of the meat. And you got to use real garlic and it’s got to be fresh. Don’t use that stuff in the jars. It might be no good.”

Also, my other favorite is from My Big Fat Greek Wedding-
“You a vegetarian? Fine then, we’ll have lamb!”
